Baby yoga Q&A

Can yoga harm baby?

Baby yoga will not hurt the child, because it is conducted very gently, with the mother just moving her hands over baby's body, with no strength at all. As the child grows, more pressure can gradually be applied.

When is it best to start?

A baby should not start yoga in the 4-6 week period after birth, because it is too weak and needs to get used to the air and environment.

What if baby doesn't like it?

If baby shows any sign of discomfort, the mother should stop at once and continue with the next movement. For example, many babies might not like massage of the ears or opening and stretching of the arms. There will not be any damage, so long as movements are gentle.

What time of the day is best?

Mornings and late afternoons tend to be more convenient for mothers, especially as baby yoga aids digestion problems, which might lead to baby not resting well at night. But any time that is convenient for baby and mum is fine.

Where do we practice?

The best place is on the bed, which is soft and spacious. The mother can also exercise on the floor, using a mat. The setting should be comfortable and tranquil.

Which body parts should be exercised?

It is a whole-body exercise. For baby it starts with the legs, to the tummy, chest, arms and up to the neck and head. The massage prepares baby's head for staying straight.
